Born in Cardiff to a miner, Jacob, and his wife Margaret Davies, she was named after the soprano Clara Novello and herself came a famous singer, conductor, singing teacher and choir leader.
Ivor Novello was born David Ivor Davies, to Clara Novello Davies and David Davies, also in Cardiff, on the 15th of January, 1893. Clara and David also adopted Marie Williams, who became a concert pianist as Marie Novello, who died of throat cancer in 1928, aged 44.
Ivor took his mother’s middle name Novello as a famous actor and composer, legally changing his name to Ivor Novello in 1927.
Clara Novello Davies died on the 7th of February, 1943, aged 81, and Ivor Novello died on the 6th of March, 1951, aged 58.
Robert “Bobbie” Andrews was Ivor’s partner from 1916 until his death.
